Nanaimo District Fastball Teams in tough action
The Nanaimo Nitro Midget "C" Girls continue to impress their mainland opposition by winning a Silver Medal at a tournament in Newton. Coach Rob Ripley credits the results to power at the bat. In total the Nitro hit 6 homeruns with Kiley McNeil and Shelby Rauch each knocking 2 homers a piece. In addition to the homers Krystal Ripley went 6 for 8 on the stick on the final day. The Nitro faced the New West Royals in the Gold medal match that finished 8-6 for the Royals.
The Nanaimo Knights Bantam Boys Fastball team played their way to a Silver medal in Abbotsford. In a tournament that saw older Midget teams combine with the Bantams the Knights battled through the adversity of having a short bench and displayed their their grit by losing a nail biter to capture the Silver.
Nanaimo's Big Iron Pee Wee Diamonds faced their first test of the season as they travelled to Softball City to compete in a 12 team tournament. After it was all said and done the Diamonds ended up in 9th place. Coach Jen Cawthorne was not dismayed with the result as these were the first games the Pee Wee Diamonds have played this spring. All the other tournaments have been cancelled by weather. On a bright side Cawthorone said their pitching held up well and the defence was tight. The Pee Wee Diamonds are made up of first year Rep players and will be working hard to be in ready form the next time they step on the field. The PeeWee Diamonds see action again in View Royal on May 10 & 11.
Nanaimo's Aviawest Squirt Diamonds found themselves in North Delta in a 10 team tournament attended by most of the best Squirt B Teams in BC. Diamond chucker, Samantha Walkosky was a dominate force on the mound and showed she is at the top of Squirt Pitchers in the province. The Diamonds advanced to the playoff round finishing ahead of 5 other teams after a 4 game round robin but fell to the South Delta Invaders in a 4-3 clash. The Diamonds had earlier beat the Invaders 16-6 in the round robin.
This tournament was also the first time the Diamonds got to size up their mainland counterparts. The girls played their tails off to get to where they got and were exhausted after playing 3 games back to back. They never let up and had runners in scoring position every inning in the heartbreaking loss. The Squirt Diamonds will be travelling to Ladner for their next tournament action on May 23.
